No broadband service? Why not a dialband?

Why do you need broadband? Always on, faster download and cheaper than dialup.
But broadband is not available for many, and it will be like that for many more years.

So why can’t ISP and telecom offers the same broadband fees over dialup, so that we can just made the connections in flat rate when broadband isn’t available?
Speed is not a major issue, I don’t download mp3 or avi all that much. I still remember when Ericsson’s HiS being offered in my area, I grabbed it without second thought for a very simple reason: flat rate.
The speed was slow, the most I’ve got was 10k per second download (slightly better than my dialup), but it was a joy using it without having to bother to cut the link when I was idling, doing something offline, or forgotten to turn it off while going to sleep.

The single powerful attraction here was the cost, and only follow by the real broadband advantage of “always on” and “speed”. A dialup can be still “always on” – anyone has experienced wake up in the morning and realized the modem was staying up all night?

So why not having a new “dailband” service for all land phone subscribers? No major investment for telco, just some minor changes on the billing system and there you go – dailband to every household.

Isn’t that good for you and me? Isn’t that the fastest way to spread internet usage?

No license to kill

My driving license expired on 1st of May 2005, and I’ve been driving without license for a few days without realizing it.
Took my queue in the post office this morning, waited 40 minutes to get my license renewed – for another 5 years.
I remember 5 years ago I was taking my queue in the same post office (wasted much longer time standing) – and I wished it’ll be all renewable online via the internet 5 years from than.

Well, obviously it isn’t happening. But hey, they have at least upgraded to the ticket numbering system, instead of letting everyone to stand in the queue.
So what should I wish from now? Online renewal via internet in 5 years? Not again. Maybe I don’t have to renew my driving license anymore in 5 years when I’ve got a driver around – in my dream. Maybe I’ll be renewing my pilot license instead when those flying machines finally take off?

Why the hack should I need to pay my driving license by-the-way?

Digging out old data

Many of my data stored in the legacy 100 MB Zip disks. It is rather difficult to find a functioning Zip drive around nowadays, and even so I’ve forgotten the password set on it. So they are as good as gone.

I have another 2 GB data archived in a 8mm tape drive (similar to the Hi8 tape) that I have no idea how it can be retrieved since the drive broken years ago.

Wondering where will all my CD-R backup heading ten years from now?
